On Tuesday, October 3, 2023, the City of San Benito’s Cultural Arts Department’s (CAD) leadership announced the latest exhibition at the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum: Al otro lado/Going Across, showcasing Mexican artist, Javier Dragustinovis’s most recent exploration of the nuances of migration and borders.

This exhibition highlights the crossing of food, music, and memory, according to a statement by CAD officials. Dragustinovis makes use of everyday artifacts to show the movement of culture and its impact on cross-border communities. Foodstuffs, such as avocado and corn, and common materials (glass and concrete) are transformed into a visual representation of this dynamic, according to CAD’s statement.

According to Aleida Garcia, the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum Director, Al otro lado/Going Across guides viewers into the parallels between this relationship and that of immigrants with borders. Both questioning and healing, Dragustinovis creates a space for the viewer to inquire about their relationship to cultural migration.

The release states that the migratory patterns of flavors and culture are expanded in Dragustinovis’s use of his glass bottle installation series and serigraph prints of corridos. Through food and music, Dragustinovis invites the viewer into a communal experience not too distant from sharing a meal with the border community to the soundtrack of an iconic Northern Mexico/South Texas sound.
