South Padre Island’s General Election is Tuesday, November 7. Incumbent Rees Langston and her challenger, Tally Ragsdale, are the two candidates running for Position 4 on the City Council. Early voting starts Monday, October 23, in the SPI Community Center at 451 Padre Boulevard.

Facing off with Langston, Ragsdale is the aspirant candidate in this race. Before moving to the island full-time 16 years ago, her family had come down every summer since she was a year old, so she had always considered SPI her second home. Ragsdale reminisces about spending her teenage years working for Sonny’s Beach Services. This experience parlayed itself into helping her sister form a competing business called Ocean Kissed Rentals, located in Saida Towers.

Ragsdale graduated from Oklahoma State with a Marketing Degree and a minor in International Business & Management. When finished, Ragsdale felt unready to enter the corporate world. Instead, she had a mentor guide her through getting her real estate license, and Ragsdale sold real estate in Austin for a few years before moving to the island. She is so busy with her business that she doesn’t focus on trying to sell real estate in the lower Rio Grande at this time.

The independent candidate and her friends have discussed getting into the political arena for some time. She saw this City Council race as a good opportunity to throw her hat into the ring. Ragsdale feels she will bring youth, positivity and a fresh voice into SPI’s local politics.

“My friends and I felt compelled to get involved at a young age to learn the ropes and work towards impactful change in the community,” said Ragsdale. “As we get older, SPI will eventually wind up being in our hands, so why not learn how to make the changes that the community needs now?”
