St. Mary-Corwin offers lung cancer screenings Nov. 11
St. Mary-Corwin Hospital is set to offer lung cancer screenings Nov. 11.
“Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States and more than 127,000 people die every year because of lung cancer,” said oncology nurse Cori Baxter. “With increased screening rates, we can raise awareness and help save more lives.”
Screenings are for people who have a history of heavy smoking and are suggested for those between the ages of 50 and 80 for Colorado Medicaid and private insurance patients or age 50 to 77 for Medicare patients. Insurance will cover the cost of the screening if the patient meets the eligibility requirements.
To schedule a screening, call Baxter at 719-557-4408. A medical provider order is required for lung screening.

Parkview adds treatment machine to cancer center
The Parkview Comprehensive Cancer Center celebrated its one-year anniversary recently with the addition of a second Varian Edge Linear Accelerator treatment machine to enhance radiation oncology services.
The latest addition makes Parkview Comprehensive Cancer Center the only radiation oncology department in the state of Colorado with two matched Edge Linear Accelerators, which are considered to be the most sophisticated and accurate treatment machines on the market, according to a press release.
“When we designed and built the facility, we installed our first linear accelerator machine and put the infrastructure in place to hold a second machine,” said Shelly Adams, clinical director of the cancer center. “We planned to add it at some point in the future, but within the first few months of being open, we realized that the needs in the community were greater than what one machine could deliver.”

Puebloan named to urban forestry consortium
Forestry leader and Pueblo resident Dana Karcher has been selected to serve on the Colorado Front Range Urban Forestry Consortium’s new steering committee.
Karcher, an arborist and project developer at Davey Resource Group, Inc., is among 18 Front Range residents selected to help drive the region’s urban forestry initiatives. The consortium’s mission is to foster regional coordination, advance equity and promote climate action through innovative urban forestry strategies.
The work will be bolstered by historic federal investments in nature-based climate solutions thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act. In 2023, The U.S. Forest Service has awarded over $22 million to Colorado communities for Urban and Community Forestry work spanning the next five years.
